The Hazards of Colon Cleansing
Tuesday, December 18th, 2007 by Sara Gidson   Subscribe To Our FeedIf you are concerned about your wellbeing, you may have noticed the many advertisements claiming that colon cleansing can help relieve numerous health problems. When done properly, colon cleansing can be a good way to relieve the symptoms attributed to a blocked colon.
However, there are some hazards of colon cleansing that you should be aware of. These hazards depend on what type of colon cleansing you are thinking of undertaking.
There are three types of colon cleansing - using liquid or powdered supplements and colonic hydrotherapy.
The Hazards of Colonic Hydrotherapy
Colonic Hydrotherapy, also called colonic irrigation, is a technique that has been used for thousands of years, with the first recorded use in a 3000 year old Egyptian medical document. The process involves inserting a rubber tube into the rectum and then the waste in the colon is flushed out with water. Sometimes the water contains oxygen, herbs or coffee.
This procedure is controversial and potentially dangerous. It should only be conducted by a certified and well trained practitioner, and people wishing to carry out the procedure should seek good medical advice first. One of the main hazards is if the rubber tube or any other tool that is used to rinse out your colon is not enough sterile, you may finish up with bacterial infection.
The Hazards of Colon Cleansing Supplements
Colon cleansing supplements - in liquid, powered or capsule form - are generally safe when used correctly.
One of main hazards of supplements is the quality of ingredients. Put simply, you need to be confident that the ingredients are of a high quality and will do what they say they will do.
In a herbal product you want a product that includes herbal laxatives, which will help to relieve constipation and ensure regular bowl movements. You also want an ingredient like bentonite, that will effectively clean the toxins out and aid in the elimination process. It is also a good idea to use a product that includes a priobiotic, which helps ensure that the good bacteria that boosts your immune system will thrive in your digestive tract. Other ingredients that you may find include flaxseed oil, cascara and psyllium. Products that include some or all of these herbal ingredients are Colonix, the 7 Day Miracle Cleanse, Bowtrol and the Super Colon Cleanse.
Generally speaking, oxygen and magnesium based supplements, such as Oxy-Powder, are considered more effective than herbal cleansers.
